TV Taser Poll 2010

A couple of years ago TV stations had a great idea: let’s show viewers what it’s like to be Tasered by turning the stun guns on our reporters. Naturally, they did it during ratings to drive up the numbers. Who wouldn’t tune in to see someone being Tasered? I’d watch that over and over.

Now that Tasering is thought to be a little hazardous, local TV news came up with a new idea: let’s show other people being Tased, like this week on Kansas City’s KMBC:

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather see the reporters and anchors Tased than civilians.

Back in 2006 I asked the Capital Region what local TV personality they’d like to see in a Taser demo. The response was overwhelming. so I figured it was time to hear from you again with TV TASER POLL 2010. Just in case I’ve missed your favorite, feel free to write in your choice under the “other” option.

POLL CLOSED

Who would you like to see Tasered?(poll)

Enjoy! We’ll pass along the results to the winner’s employer.

  1. more ideas are pitch-people in commercials:

    the Progressive insurance lady

That guy that dresses like a priest in the Chevrolet ads

Whoever does the hair for Channel nine newspeople

  2. Why don’t we just taser criminals, and leave it at that? I’m sure “Cops” won’t mind.

  3. How any responsible news organization can claim that “A Taser, by itself, has never officially caused a death” is just incredibly naive, uninformed and DEAD WRONG. ~ (Note the DATE!)

    “The Arizona Republic
    Jul. 30, 2005 12:00 AM

A Chicago medical examiner has ruled that shocks from a Taser were responsible for the death of a man in February, marking the first time that the electronic stun gun has been named as the primary cause of death.”

Out of 150 official, ACTUAL autopsy reports received and reviewed by The Arizona Republic as far back as 2006, over 50 named the Taser as “contributing to, or causing death”.

News organizations are doing a terrible dis-service, by continuing the MYTH that “Tasers R Safe”. Any 3rd grader with a computer and a link to Google could blow your “Tasers R Safe” fiction to where it belongs ~ the garbage can!

Tasers are perfectly capable of inducing cardiac events. That is precisely why the manufacturer no tells cops to “avoid the chest area”.

If you are going to comment on the Taser Story, please don’t pollute the airwaves and cable outlets with laughably flawed data.

  4. Skip: Really? You’d want to see Flo Tased? Not cool.

By the way, here’s some background on Flo and the actress who plays her. You know, for those of you who would not want to see her momentarily writhing in Taser induced agony: http://www.wsbtv.com/news/18186814/detail.html#-

  5. Haven’t you already conducted this poll, when you were the Albany Eye???

  6. Rob – How does 3 minutes on TV a week qualify Kristi in the same boat as the others? If that’s the case you need to expand your roster of selections.

  7. The Progressive woman has a role on “Mad Men.” That’s reason enough to leave her alone. (FYI: I vote for not Tasing anyone.)

I’d go for any news personality that fails to pronounce basic words properly, with emphasis on the ones who say “mou-en” instead of mountain, “Will-en” instead of Wilton, “impor-ent” instead of important. One such weather person, in addition, also says schrong and schrate, instead of strong and straight. Tase the lot of them, kids don’t need to pick up that bad habit.

  9. #5: Yes, of course I’ve done it before –but it’s not as if I do it every year, like the way there’s a live shot at Exit 24 every Thanksgiving.

#6: This is in no way scientific. I’d caution you against trying to apply logic to my work.

#7: Naomi, thank you for bringing a little civility to this absurd topic.

  10. Maybe the Gustafson-haters will reconsider, now that she’s dived in front of Liz Bishop to take the tasing. Damned heroic in my book.

  11. I figure Liz Bishop pulls ahead after a few days. There’s been one vote for me under “Other” so far.

  12. I love the Progressive commercials, but the girl’s mannerisms have become too similar to Kristen Wiig’s Target Cashier character. She even does the same excited double fist pump

  13. “Iā€™d caution you against trying to apply logic to my work.”

I think pretty much everyone has Rob. šŸ˜

  14. Would it be wrong to tase Luna?

  15. #13: Ha!

    #14: Hasn’t Luna suffered enough?

  16. Suprirsingly, this taser list wasn’t expanded out to the Capital Region’s commercial spokespeople. Did anybody vote in the “Other” category for car dealer Billy Fucillo, mattress hawker Justin Resznik, the Martin Harding and Mazzotti guys, the avant-garde Glenn Slingerland, or WAMC grand poobah Alan Chartock?

  17. Chuck: Glenn Slingerland. Now that’s obscure. There was one vote for Mr. Fuccillo. I think he’s a genius and would rather see him do the Tasing than being Tased. The rumormongers on other blogs would disagree.

I’ll summarize the write-in responses next week.

Actually, I think you could work Tasing into a commercial campaign that would be a real talker. Obviously it couldn’t be for a client like a bank or other serious account.

Lets have a “Where’s Waldo” category where we tase the good looking Credit Angel.

  19. I’d pay good money to see Liz Bishop tasered.

  20. #14 – only be wrong if Kristi did it. (Sorry, Luna!)

  21. I voted for Tim Drawbridge – doesn’t anyone else find him a bit overly dramatic during his weather forecasts?

  22. This is true, Christine –but the weather IS dramatic. Look how dramatic that giant killer snowstorm was this week.

  23. It’s so cute this crush you have on Kristi.

  24. #23: That’s why I couldn’t bear to vote for her. And I voted three times.
